Planning Commission Will Meet on Monday
January 15th's Planning Commission meeting for the concept site plan of Sheetz in Charlotte Hall was continued because of more information needed on traffic concerns. Commission members questioned the proposed intersection on northbound Route 5 would only stop northbound traffic to allow vehicles to exit from Charlotte Hall Commons. Traffic along southbound Route 5 would not stop so motorists turning left to head south would need to merge.
Members of the Planning Commission discussed the traffic issues already present in Charlotte Hall, and specific issues with the intersection of Route 6 just to the south. Developer proposed traffic mitigation measures would leave the new intersection and the Golden Beach Road/Route 5 intersection at a "C" Level of Service (LOS). Sheetz being built would downgrade the LOS to "F" for the MD 6 intersection. The developer proposed lane restriping. State Highway Administration did not agree because of concerns about safety for the Three Notch Trail. The meeting was continued so the developer and SHA could potentially identify a solution which would reverse the impact of Sheetz on the intersection.
