Locals Welcome & Advocate Causes
Governor Wes Moore visited St. Mary’s County and met with Commissioners yesterday afternoon. Believing that we can never miss an opportunity to advocate for ourselves, I organized a group of about 30 people to come together for the meeting. The intention was to thank Governor Moore for what he’s done for St. Mary’s so far, and to bring some key challenges to his attention.
We designed what I called an “Info Sheet” to give to the Governor and his staff. We thanked the Governor for grants that helped fund internet connectivity, crime prevention, small businesses and more. Additionally, we asked for help with funding for the YMCA, a sports complex, transportation priorities, and addressing homelessness. We also pointed out that St. Mary’s is a healthcare shortage area in need of mental health resources, as well as the need for affordable housing.
With signs highlighting successes and opportunities, an enthusiastic crowd greeted the Governor with cheers and applause as he entered the room. Governor Moore pointed to and called out the messaging on our signs throughout the meeting, and took time to meet with people afterward.
My hope in all this was to make the most of the Governor’s visit, and I will be following up with his office regarding our requests for help. To those who attended–Thank You!
The Governor said he, along with the entire Administration, will be back early next year to hold a monthly cabinet meeting in St. Mary’s County. Governor Moore said the monthly cabinet meetings are held in different counties where they can learn the most about what is needed, rather than being stationary in Annapolis.
